Reader’s Club Report (Shift-II)


Report on the functioning of Reader’s Club

With the aim of fostering reading habits among the students, and to develop information skills, we have started the functioning of the Reader’s Club in our school in the last academic year.  More than 150 students from Classes VI – XII have joined as members of the club. To make the club more effective we have constituted a Committee having six teachers, two student representatives from each class and one secretary and one join-secretary as office bearers of the club.  The first meeting of the club was held on 2nd August, 2008 in the Principal’s Chamber and charted out various programmes to be organized for the academic year 2008-09.    

Following programmes and competitions were organized by the club till January, 2009.

1. In connection with the birthday celebrations of Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling, on 31st July, 2008, we conducted the following                                     competitions in our school.

1.1. Quiz competition – quiz related to Harry Potter books. 43 students      from classes VI –XII have participated.

1.2. Jacket design competition

Asked the students to design the book jacket of Harry Potter’s next       book, if there   is 8th book to be released, what would be its title and design. 13 students have participated and the best entries were displayed in the library bulletin boards.

2.2.  Book Review competition:

Conducted a book review competition on Harry Potter books.  18 students have participated and they were divided into two groups.  Classes VI-VIII was in the junior group and Classes IX – XII in senior group.

3. Book Exhibition on Harry Potter books in the library.  Exhibited the copies of all the Harry Potter volumes in the library for one week.

4. Book Mark Design Competition

On 1st November, 2008 we have conducted a Book Mark Design competition.  55 students from classes VI – XII have participated in the competition.  Best entries were displayed in the bulletin boards. This picture shows the students’ contributionbs.


5. In connection with the National Library Week, (27.11.2208 to 2.12.2008) the following programmes and competitions were organized in the library.

5.1. Competitions

5.1.1. Reading Competition for the Primary Classes (Classes IV & V)

5.1.2. Book Review Competition for Classes VI – XII

          5.1.3. Spot Poetry Writing Competition for Classes VI – XII

5.2. Programmes


5.2.1. Inaugural function – The National Library Week Programme was   inaugurated by Dr. (Smt.) M. Lalitha, Chief Librarian, SCERT, Poojappura, TVPM on 27.11.2008.


5.2.2. Meet the author programme – Smt. Rathi Saxena, Hindi Poet and Kendra Sahithya Akademi Award winner, interacted with the students on 28.11.2008 and shared her experiences.


3.2.3. Valedictory function – It was held on 2.12.2008.  smt. Vimala Menon, Children’s writer was the Chief Guest of the day.  The principal, Dr. cicy Roy Mathew presided over the function.  Prizes to the winners of various competitions organized in different occasions were given away by Smt. Vimala Menon during the valedictory function.


3.3. Book Exhibition – M/s D.C Books, Thiruvananthapuram, has organized a book exhibition in our school from 28.11.2008 to 30.11.2008. All the students, teachers and some parents got a good chance to see the exhibition and procure their favourite books.

      Visit of Kerala Legislative Assembly



50 students and 5 staff-members of the Reader’s Club from both Shift I & II visited the Kerala Legislative Assembly, the Legislative Library and the Legislative Museum on 10.12.2008.  We could see the Assembly Proceedings including questionnaire session, walk-out by the Opposition Party, and so on.  In the library we could see the rare collections of government proceedings, bound volumes of newspapers, reference books etc.  In the legislative museum we have seen pictures and photographs of the members of the Royal families of Cochin Travancore States, pictures related to the history of Travancore, Kerala history, contributions of Ministers, Members of the Legislative Assembly, etc.
