I have no doubt that Mr. Kapil Sibal is dead earnest in reforming Indian Education System. Unfortunately it is too complicated a puzzle that has no simple answers. What is remarkable about the whole debate and write ups on higher education is deafening silence of the universities, teachers’ bodies and various forums concerned with education. Have they lost hope in reforming our system?

It is worth recalling Lord Macaulay’s thoughts on the subject as he is considered as the architect of present education system.

The passage is from his Minute on Indian Education, delivered in 1835. It reads,

“It is impossible for us, with our limited means, to attempt to educate the body of the people. We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern; a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect. To that class we may leave it to refine the vernacular dialects of the country, to enrich those dialects with terms of science borrowed from the Western nomenclature, and to render them by degrees fit vehicles for conveying knowledge to the great mass of the population.”

What we need is the wisdom of Lord Macaulay.

May I humbly modify Lord Macaulay’s famous speech that may guide us for the well being of our billion plus citizens.

“It is impossible for us, with our limited means, to attempt to educate the body of the people. We must at present do our best to form a class who may be true interpreters of inspirations of millions who in fact are sovereign; a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, as well upholders of values, culture and intellect that is truly Indian. To that class we may leave it to unify the cultural, linguistic, regional and religious diversities of the country, to enrich those diversities with terms of science and technology, and to render them by degrees fit vehicles for conveying knowledge to the great mass of the population.”

What is needed is rephrasing this small paragraph and rest everything will fall in place.

  3. DR.Rahul Singh says:

    Well done!,
    Kapil Sibal!
I am proud of you, well done for reforming the exam system.

  4. Finally one man in the Indian politics, who has seriously understood the power of his position to reform the roots.

Thanking him is too small deed.

The thought and the effort to transform and make a common syllabus in science and maths is brilliant.

The beginning to abolish the silly interview system for nursery classes is the need of the hour in our rising stressful society.

May I also request look into the commercialization of the education system and to abolish under the table transactions or the blatant donations extraction by schools.

Any help needed will be given at any point by the members of and

We need thinking ministers like Mr Kapil Sibal.

i completely agree with you madhurie . but then , the reform s that he is ushering in must be on a very fast track basis , though it is herculian not just to change the mind set but also hte huge adminisrative and machinery change over . but still may god bless this transition in system to be smooth leaving no post retaliatory negative comments to fly high in public air.

  5. DR.MURTHY GALI says:

This is my heart felt regards for some body who knows his job.I really want to bring two things for his attention .Quality Education and quality health Encourage professionalism in these two areas . Give good salaries & incentives. At the same time make them accountable .Ask them to produce results or fire them. This what I would do for better India. There should be Uniform standard at Central level to avoid disparity both in medicine and teaching. Since you are there at helm of affairs who thinks for our nation and wish to see your response.
