Knowing your library better is the first step to utilizing it fruitfully.

Our library has a good physical infrastructure and a wealthy knowledge base.

Location

The library situated on the First Floor of the main buiding of the Vidyalaya opposite to the Office.You can easily locate it from the main entrance also.

The library has a good reading room and a stack room(where the books are shelved).

There are 07 reading tables and 65 chairs.

NEW ARRIVALS

See the new books arrived in the library.Books are kept here for display for one week before circulation.

The readers can reserve the new books by writing the detals on the reservation register.

READY REFERENCE

Dictionaries, Yearbooks,Almanacs,Thesaurus,Books of Quotations,Atlases, etc for ready reference are kept here.

PERIODICAL SECTION

Our library subscribes more than 65 periodicals that include General, Subject and Children’s periodicals.

New periodicals are kept outside on the pegion holes.For back volums please look inside.

Don’t remove the jacket when you read the magazines.

(Online Public Access Catalogue)

Users can search books by its Name,Title,Subject, Series, Accession No., etc

Just put the keywords into the “Look For” field and click on “Search“. You will get the list of serched books.

Note the “Call No” and go to the diplay of “shelf No. index” and find the shelf.

Go to the shelf and pick the book.

Things to remember

  • Once you have taken a book from the shelf, after reading or referring, put it back in the same place according to its “Call No”.
  • Place the books such as the spine of the book facing you.

CLASSIFICATION

The books are clasified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification(DDC), Ed.21.It is a decimal scheme of book classification where the whole subjects are classified in to 10 divisions. Every division is again classified into 10 divisions and so on. The numbers are easy to remember.

Eg:

500          : Science

530          : Physics

530.1       : Theoretical physics

530.11     : Theory of relativity

530.4       : Properties of matter

530.41     : Solid state Physics

BOOK IDENTIFICATION

Two labels are there on a book, Spine label(on the spine of the book) and Barcode label (on the Title page of the book).

Spine label

The main parts are explained here with  an example,

Library ID: KV-P(means KV Pattom)

Class No: 823.01(means English Short Stories)

Book NoMAR-I (means First three letters of the author:”Marques” and first letter of    the title:”Innocent Erindira”)

Class No. and book No. together called Call Number of the book

Accession No. of the book is also given on the spine label.

Barcode label

It contains a barcode of the Accession No.along with call no.

This barcode is read by a barcode reader at the issue /return counter when you issue or return a book.

The books are shelved according to its call no. shelf Numbers are also given for easy identification.

If there is more than one book with the same Call No. they are arranged according to  Alphabetical order.
